Our specialist BORDA (British Off Road Driving Association) training module covering the safe towing of trailers, transport of loads and carrying of specialist implements in off-road environments.
Suitable for operators of 4x4 vehicles, ATVs and UTVs, this practical module can be incorporated into other BORDA driver training courses or delivered as standalone training to meet specific operational requirements.
Towing trailers or carrying loads off road introduces additional hazards that can significantly affect vehicle handling, stability and stopping distances. Even relatively light loads can alter a vehicle's centre of gravity, while incorrectly loaded trailers or implements can quickly become unstable on uneven terrain. If your staff are provided with powered or specialist equipment, employers have a legal duty under the Health & Safety at Work Act and PUWER regulations to provide appropriate training.
Our British Off Road Driving Association (BORDA) accredited training is developed by industry professionals to ensure participants gain the knowledge and practical skills needed to:
Understand safety and legal responsibilities
Understand vehicle, trailer and equipment compatibility and limits
Carry out pre-use inspections and equipment checks
Carry out trailer coupling and uncoupling procedures
Ensure safe load distribution, centre of gravity, load security and nose weight
Safely drive on a variety of off-road terrain whilst carrying loads or towing trailers
Confidently reverse and manoeuvre with a load or trailer off road
Carry out route planning and terrain assessment to ensure vehicle stability
Suitable for all commercial operators using 4×4, ATV or UTV vehicles, with training delivered to British Off Road Driving Association (BORDA) standards as recommended by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE).

TRAINING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, participants will:

Inspect vehicles, trailers, loads & associated equipment before use
Load, secure and transport equipment safely and correctly
Understand how loads, trailers and specialist implements affect vehicle stability, steering and braking
Operate vehicles whilst transporting loads, towing trailers or carrying specialist implements across varied off-road terrain
Reverse and manoeuvre trailers safely in confined off-road environments
Couple and uncouple trailers safely using approved procedures
Reduce wear and avoid damage to vehicles, trailers and equipment
Minimise risks to people, property and the environment through effective planning and safe working practices
Delivery
This specialist module can be incorporated into our 4x4 Vehicle, ATV and UTV training courses, allowing participants to develop additional skills relevant to their operational role and working environment.
Where organisations require training focused specifically on off-road load carrying, trailer operations or specialist implements, the module can also be delivered as a standalone course.
Training can be delivered at your site (where suitable) or at our dedicated training centre in West Dunbartonshire, using your own vehicles, trailers and specialist equipment wherever practical to maximise relevance and real-world application.
